It is important for calf health that milk is delivered at the right speed to optimise digestive health and performance.
As a teat ages, the rubber becomes softer and milk flow increases. As a calf approaches weaning the more developed digestive system can manage this slightly increased flow but for young calves, a faster flow impacts health and can result in cross suckling and nutritional scours.
How to use:
1. Use the yellow training nipple for the first 2 - 7 days before switching to the black Milk Bar Revolution nipple until weaning.
When to replace:
When we talk about a worn teat, we are referring to drinking speed. Drinking speed and calf health (and subsequent cost reduction) go hand in hand.
The nipple controls the flow for around 140 feeds so replacement depends on how often you use the nipple per day:
2 x day: Around 10 weeks (140 feeds). 3 x day: Around 7 weeks (140 feeds).
4 x day: Around 5 weeks (140 feeds). 5 x day: Around 4 weeks (140 feeds).
It is important to diarise nipple changes as sometimes a worn nipple may not be leaking, but the flow is to fast and the problems Milk Bar is designed to improve start to emerge.
The calves will tell you when the teats have become soft and need replacement. As the milk flow increases they will start to display hyperactive behaviour. As soon as you start to see this, change your teats to prevent the next stage of fast flow which is diarrhoea.
